In our last update of Her Journey news, we were counting down the launch of our new website. It's been up and running for almost a month now, have you stopped by yet?! You have 5 minutes! We are sad to announce that we will no longer be updating this blog, but we are moving on to featuring the magazine articles and blog posts all in one place. We hope you'll continue to grow with us, as we expand our website to fit our growing audience. We don't want to loose your loyalty!

Practicing the 10th Agreement - Walk With Courage

Today, Is the last installment in the series, "The 10 Agreements for Living the Life you Truly Desire." I invite you to participate in the conversation as we explore the power of living a well lived life.

I came up with the "10 Agreements for Living the Life you Truly Desire" to help myself and other women identify those areas that would give us the direction we need to live our lives with fulfillment, purpose and joy.

•Agreement # 1: I agree to help others in their quest to live the life they truly desire.
•Agreement # 2: I agree to discover how to develop myself to the fullest extent.
•Agreement #3: I agree to remember that there is no perfection, only process.
•Agreement #4: I agree to take life serious enough to remember to laugh with the good times and some of the sad ones.
•Agreement #5: I agree to stop self judging behavior and replace it with self assessment.
•Agreement #6 - I agree to share my gifts and talents with everyone I meet.
•Agreement #7 - I agree to not make apologies for or bad mouth who I am, how I'm created, or how I think.
•Agreement #8 - I agree to admit to what I don't know and learn it only if necessary.

•Agreement #9 I agree to remember that there is no true success without synergy.

Agreement #10- I agree to walk with the courage needed to make a positive difference on this planet, in my community, and in my very own life.

Years ago I altered the traditional approach to setting new year's resolutions and began to select a single word as my focus word for improvement for the year. One year it was joy, another year it was finances and this year it was courage. Actually, it's been courage for the past two years. I know what next years is, but I'm holding that under my hat until January 1st!

Anywho, Agreement #10 is the quintessential agreement because the truth of the matter is that to some degree we must activate our courage if we're going to attempt to do anything in life. Therapist and philosopher Rollo May has a great definition of courage that I use for myself and teach to my students: "courage is not the absence of fear, but going forward despite fear or doubt. Many of my former students have written to me years later and shared with me how life changing the teaching on courage and the courage of creativity has been for their lives.
Striving to make a difference in our very own lives, the community and on this planet, to some, might seem to be a rather lofty goal. Yet, it's something that we must do. Creating a life of value and positive impact in the world ought to become our most important creed. I'm certainly making it mine.

As we end this journey of discovery through the 10 Agreements for living the life you truly desire, I want to thank you for joining me. Your comments have deeply enriched my life and the lives of others. Leave a comment and let me know how you're doing with implementing the 10 Agreements. Travel Tuesday: Vienna for beginners (Part Three)

Over the last two weeks, we visited the heart of Vienna by walking down Kartnerstrasse and Graben. There's one more street and two squares left in this tour of Vienna--Kohlmarkt, Michaelerplatz, and Heldenplatz.

Last time, we left off at the Julius Meinl cafe. As you turn left and continue down the Kohlmarkt, you'll be in one of the ritziest shopping streets in the city. A fun place to visit is about three quarters of the way down on the right: Demel Hofzuckerbacker (chocolatier and bakery). The shop has been around since 1786, which means that it predates the United States' Constitution. You can go in and look at all the amazingly crafted chocolates or you can sit and eat a slice of cake in the cafe. This cafe is one of the few that is smoke-free in Vienna, by the way, and its Sacher Torte is considered the chief rival to Hotel Sacher's.

If you don't have time to go in, at least take the opportunity to look at the window displays. They change with the seasons, and they are always pretty incredible, with the almost life-sized marzipan figures. It's ice cream season right now, so the man below is an ice cream cone with scoops for arms. (Important tourist note: the word for ice cream in German is "Eis," pronounced exactly like "ice." If you ask for an ice coffee, the waiter will think you mean an Eiskaffee, and he will bring you a coffee-ice cream sundae.)

Then the end of the street brings you to Michaelerplatz. What you see below is a photo of where you would be standing if you followed the route above. The big building is where the emperors lived! It's called the Hofburg, and inside is the Sissi Museum, the Imperial Apartments, and the Spanish Riding School.

Right in front of the Hofburg, however, are Roman ruins in the process of being excavated. The story is that they were digging a new U-bahn station there when they stumbled upon Roman ruins and had to stop the work.

If you continue through the Hofburg, you'll get to see where the emperors lived, and if you take the time to tour the Imperial Apartments and the Sissi Museum you will learn a ton about Empress Sissi (Elisabeth of Bavaria), who is simultaneously this revered figure in Austrian history and a total mystery. Below you can see a famous portrait of Sissi. She was considered the most beautiful woman in Europe, if you can believe that, and was known for her amazingly long hair and tiny waist. She was desperately unhappy as the subject of public attention, however, and spent her whole life traveling away from the court. She also studied five languages and had her tutors read Greek epics to her while servants brushed her hair. She also rode horses and was a daredevil. She had her own private bathroom decorated with all the plants and animals of the jungle, and she washed her hair with her own special "shampoo" of cognac and egg yolks. She was also known for having had a sweet tooth and ordered lots of cookies from Demel's. Clearly I was fascinated.

If you keep going through the Hofburg, you'll arrive in Heldenplatz! To your left is the National Library. It's slightly impressive looking. Inside are not only all the books, but four museums: the State Hall, the Papyrus Museum, the Globe Museum, and the Esperanto Museum. For those of you who don't know, Esperanto is a totally made up language, and the museum houses the "Department of Planned Languages," where more than 500 "planned" (or "invented," "made-up") languages are documented. According to the website, it is the world's largest library on interlinguistics. So get excited about THAT.

To your right in Heldenplatz (and pictured below) is my absolute favorite view in Vienna. Above the trees, behind the park, are the spires of the Rathaus. At night, they are lit up.

I used to bike ride to work just so I could see this view in the morning (I gave up because bike riding on cobblestones is absolutely not comfortable). It's just a beautiful building, and people are always walking by calmly, and the atmosphere is perfect. It is such a statement about Vienna to emerge from the home of the Emperors and to see the majestic buildings to your left and your right, surrounded by parks and facing a giant ornamental gate. If you go to Vienna, you absolutely must do this walk... it sums up so much about the history and the style of life in the city.

Closer to the Rathaus... and throughout the summer, the city holds giant free concerts in the square in front of it.

Travel Tuesday: Vienna for beginners, Part 2

Last week in "Vienna for Beginners," we began a tour of the heart of Vienna in three streets and three squares, going from Karlsplatz down Kärtnerstrasse to Stephansplatz. This is the heart of Vienna--the most central section, with historical landmarks leading up and down the shopping streets from the Stephansdom Cathedral to the Hofburg Quartier, the former home of the emperors.

Last time, we left off the tour at Stephansplatz, seen above. You've got the Haas Haus on the left and Stephansdom straight ahead. Now, if you have Kärtnerstrasse at your back, take a left onto Graben to continue on our journey!

One of the first things you'll see as you start down Graben is a big, weird statue. Ignore that for the time being, because on your left is an H&M. This is the only H&M I've ever been in that has chandeliers and wood paneling inside. See below.

Now, how fancy does that look? Unbelievable. It used to be an upscale men's suit store, but then it went out of business. H&M moved in, but it kept the beautiful decor. There's even a grand staircase inside.Totally worth looking inside, even if you don't need a pair of sunglasses for 5 euros.

And now there's no avoiding the enormous statue in the middle of the all-pedestrian street. It's the Pestsäule (German for "Plague Column"--clearly marketing was not a high priority back in 17th century...), and it commemorates the end of the plague in Vienna. It looks like a big, crazy, imposing mess.

Apparently, the figures in the statue tell the story of the plague and of Vienna's redemption, but I'm not necessarily buying it. I need an art historian or something to stand next to me and explain it all to me. Anyway... just past the statue on your right is a church. It doesn't look that impressive, but do not be fooled by its humble exterior. The inside is amazing.

Everything is covered in gold, and there are two complete skeletons encrusted in jewels with swords and scabbards and everything!!! They were early martyrs, and they're kept in glass coffins on either side of the altar. AMAZING!!! I can't believe how cool it was.

You can barely see the details in this picture, but take my word for it: amazingness. This church was also erected to commemorate the end of the plague, but several centuries earlier. Different plagues, different times, same imperial impulse: build something big and then God won't be mad and punish us all with the plague. And hey--no plague now! It must have worked.

At the end of the street, you'll be looking straight at a building with a big Julius Meinl sign on it--this is an incredible gourmet grocery store, cafe, and restaurant complex. If you go to the second floor, you can sit by the cafe windows and look out over the Graben and watch the people walk by for hours. It's a little pricey, but you only need to buy a cup of coffee to be able to sit there for as long as you want.

If you turn left at Meinl, you'll be heading down our last street--Kohlmarkt. We have one street and two squares left, so stick with us until next week when we finish the tour of the heart of Vienna's inner city!

Motivational Monday: Take Your Job Search Offline

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about using temporary staffing agencies to get a job. This week, I want to briefly tell you some other ways to snag a job. Now, let me stress again that looking for a job is your job. While you have no job, your only job is to look for a job. So take your job very seriously, your job depends on it.

When I'm helping my clients with their job search, I strongly encourage them to do more than submit to job posts they find online. I ask them to take their search offline and network. So here are three ways to network and take your search offline.

1.) Volunteer
Nonprofit organizations are always looking for good and talented people to help them out with design, writing brochures, marketing, event planning, organizing, etc. Why are they a great place to network? Because each nonprofit has an executive board made up of presidents, vice presidents and other executives of companies. They chose to be on that board so you can be sure that they actually care about the organization. That means when an event is happening, they are most likely going to be there to participate. This is a stellar way for you to get yourself in front of people, working side by side and demonstrating your talents and ability to work hard. Volunteering is a also a great way to practice your current skills, build new ones, and help out a cause you believe in. Volunteermatch.org is a great place to start to find opportunities in your area!

2.) Professional Organizations
No matter what industry you are interested in, there is an organizing body that meets regularly. Join these organizations and attend their events. This is a stellar opportunity to meet people in your industry, keep up-to-date on new trends, and pick up a mentor.

3.) Networking Events
These are normally reserved for business people, but don't let that stop you from attending. You can find a host of groups in your area by visiting Meetup.com. There are groups that meet about every and anything. It doesn't have to be at a formal business event where you network. You can network with people who share a common interest with you whether it's salsa dance, food or French.

Yes, you can do the social media thing and connect with people all over the world but you got to get from behind the computer and meet the people you can, offline. Meeting face-to-face will always build a stronger connection.

Vienna for beginners: a tour of 3 streets and 3 squares

Vienna, Austria is one of the great cities of the world.

I'm going to go ahead and make that bold claim without feeling bad about it. You know why? Vienna in the spring is a glorious place. The parks are green and flowers bloom. Cafes put tables outside, and people sit for hours. Free city bikes magically appear on street corners.

One of the things I've learned in my six months in Vienna is that the more time you spend here, the more things there are to see.

If you’re just visiting for a few days, though, you’ve got to start somewhere. Which is why I’m taking you on a tour of just 3 streets and 3 squares—that way you’ll see the highlights of the very core of the city.

Part One: Kärtner Straße to Stephanplatz.

Hello, Opera. This is the sight of many operas as well as the famous Opera Ball, the most prestigious social event of the year in Vienna. In recent years, a Viennese shopping mall tycoon, Richard Lugner, has made a habit of inviting a celebrity to the ball. This year, it was supposed to be Lindsay Lohan, but then she went shopping and missed her plane. (Oops) On a more serious note, the Opera House was completed in 1869, was damaged by a bomb in 1945, and was renovated and reopened in 1955. You can find news and tickets here. If you don't buy tickets before your trip, though, walk along the right side of the building to see if they are live-streaming the opera taking place inside.

Can you believe this? The day I took this photo it was pretty cold and dreary, but on nice days, the whole place is packed.

As you continue across the street and onto Kärtner Straße, the first thing you'll see on the left is the Sacher Hotel, birthplace of the Viennese Sacher Torte.

Gift shop mania. Apparently they'll send a Sacher Torte anywhere in the world for you, and it will stay good for up to three weeks unopened. Is this even possible?!

If you have any interest at all in trying Sacher Torte, this is the place to do it. Expensive, but classic--definitely worth trying if you're willing to indulge on some serious chocolate cake.

Kärtner Straße is a major shopping street. Lots of clothing stores, lots of cafes, lots of gift shops for the tourists (resist! these stores are tacky!).

One thing you can go down a side street to see is Loos' American Bar. Loos was an architect with a very distinct aesthetic, and he designed this bar with an American exterior.

I've never had a drink there because I think it would be crazy expensive, but it's cool looking.

At the end of the street, you’ll find yourself at Stephansplatz. This is the very center of the city and the home of Stephansdom, a cathedral that is one of the main symbols of the city. It was originally built in the 13th century, but major additions were made in the 14th and 15th centuries and later. It’s huge, and entrance is free.

Check out the tiled roof. It’s hard to see in a picture, but in person, it’s amazing. There are almost 250,000 tiles making the pattern you see there as well as the two-headed eagle that is the symbol of Austria. You can see it if you walk down a side street, though.

Across the square from Stephansdom is the Haas House, home to the upscale Do & Co Hotel. Look at the glass--you can see the reflection of Stephansdom in it! You can visit the Onyx Bar to get an unparalleled view directly on the cathedral. If you’re going on a weekend night, you’ll probably need a reservation, so call ahead. You can find out more here.

My sister and I went on her last night in Vienna, and it was the perfect way to close her trip—a really special place and view out at the heart of the city.

The tour will continue next week as we head from Stephansplatz down Graben and towards the Hofburg Imperial Quarters!

Agreement #8 - I agree to admit to what I don't know and learn it only if necessary.

This agreement is all about making peace with what you do know and what you don't know and not folding to live up to other people's intellectual standards. In our busy and fast paced world and with nifty friend the internet at our fingertips it's possible for us to take in an awful lot of information. But as we all know, to much of anything can put us into overload and have our brains sparking and sputtering like a faulty electrical wire ready to explode. We don't have to succumb to the pressure of becoming a know-it-all.

I've really been putting this agreement into practice. I'm a college professor, so I of course believe in learning, but I don't believe you should learn something just because it will make you look more important or gain you cache in a given circle. I love history, and a few years ago I was being very heavily persuaded by members of my academic circle to pursue a doctorial degree in History. I succumbed, but didn't last long because my heart wasn't in it. I was going against Agreement #8 so I quit.

The other day I was on Twitter having a conversation with one of my fellow twitterer's and she asked me if it was silly of her to ask me about how to get a domain name to link to a blog. I replied that of course it wasn't silly, especially since she's interested in setting up a blog and having her own domain name. We went on to have a pretty robust conversation where I shared what I do know about blogging and setting things up. Now I'm no expert on setting up blogs (I leave that to my friend Jamila the EcommerceDiva!), but I have learned enough to make my life easier and so I was able to pass that info on to my fellow twitterer. For me, this is a good example of only learning something if it's necessary.

Also, in my role as a professor I've learned to not be afraid to admit to my students that I don't know something. It's a very liberating mind set. One time I told my class that I didn't know the answer to a question, but that I'd research it and get back to them, which I did. A student from that class shared with me how surprised she was that I actually said I didn't know and then actually found the answer and brought it back to the class. She said most teachers would have faked it and pretended like they knew the answer.

Agreement #8 speaks to our integrity. I encourage you to become an advocate of only learning what's essential, freeing up our minds to be available for our highest creativity to thrive. Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Social Network Your Way to a Job

We often use Facebook and Twitter to update our statuses about random facts, jokes, hilarious videos, tips, inspirational quotes or as a platform to rant and rave about all the wrongdoings or mishaps in our lives. The latter part of that is not so great—even though we’ve all done this a few times or more—but social media platforms are great ways to stay in touch, get connected, discuss current events, products, brands…and find jobs!

Tip # 1: Did you know that companies are now looking into the social depth—which is the number of friends, followers or connections on various social platforms-- of a job candidate on their social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn? Be aware that some do and others just check to see what you are talking about (don’t forget to update your privacy settings) aka cyber-stalking. They are using this information to see how many people one can reach through their networks and ultimately, help promote their products and services.

Over the last few months, I have seen jobs posted on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other online communities outside of job boards. Hiring managers for the most part are not posting these listings; it’s our friends who may know of a job opening in their company or they are leaving a position and want to let their closest friends and family know.

Tip # 2: For the hiring managers that do post positions, why don’t you contact that person and build a relationship via Twitter and/or LinkedIn—not Facebook as it is too personal. If you don’t qualify for the posted position, help them spread the word and offer to send resumes of qualified candidates. Make this relationship a two way street; and who knows what the outcome of the relationship will be?

Tip # 3: Are you looking to work for a particular company? Keep up-to-date on potential jobs by following that company or organization on Twitter, “like” the community page on Facebook and other social networks they belong to.

Job boards are decent tools to find a job but if you can strike up a relationship with a hiring manager at one of your target companies, stay connected via social networks and other online communities and just pay attention to what your friends/trusted sources post, you may become the hunted rather than the hunter.

From Temporary Employee to Permanent Staff

So the partying is all done and now the job hunt is on. Stellar!

According to the Department of Labor Statistics, unemployed people spend about 18 minutes a day looking for a job. Crazy isn't it? What are they probably doing? My bet is that they are going on Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com and other large job search sites, finding a couple of jobs to apply to, sending out resumes and then calling that a job search. It's better than doing nothing I guess. But you're serious about your job search and know you will find the job you want because you understand that looking for a job is now your job. So while others are logging on to Facebook to play Farmville, Sorority Life and Mafia Wars, you are still searching. And, although looking online and doing all those social media things are a great way to network, I would like you to remove yourself from the computer and get out there and meet people, face-to-face. Here is one way you can do that.

Do you know about temporary staffing agencies?
I find that almost all of my clients have never heard about them before. So, let me just tell all of you at the same time.

During the course of a year, employees have emergencies in their lives, get pregnant, have extended leaves of absence and so on. The work still needs to be done so companies turn to staffing agencies to help fill the gap. You could be assigned to a company for a day, weeks, or longer. There are also some opportunities to work somewhere temporarily and it lead to a permanent position.

When I first graduated from college, this is the way I survived. This is a great way to get some experience and to get some money in your pocket at the same time. And there are staffing agencies that specialize in all sorts of industries such as creative (for the designers, writers, editors), accountants, engineers, etc. You tend to get paid more when you work with a specialized agency than when you work with a general agency doing reorganizing and filing of patient files, answering phones at a winery or photocopying pharmaceutical medical recipes. (Yes, these are actual jobs I have done.) The agency is paid by the company looking to fill a position. You are not charged. And if you come across one that does want to charge you, I'd move on.

The best tip I got from a recruit I signed up with was for me to call her once a week so I would stay on top of her mind. I turned around and did that for all five agencies I was signed up with. When I called, I wasn't aggressive and demanded that they find me something. I called or emailed saying I was still available for work and just checking in with them in case something came across their desk. And, it worked. I always had work because I made sure I stayed fresh on their mind. And you should too!

Oh, yes, before I forget, I did sign up with five agencies. Why? Because each agency had different companies as clients. When one didn't have work for me I had the other four I could contact. You've got to keep you options open.

While you are working where you are placed by the staffing agency you can get to meet new people. You want to do stellar work so that the people there will grow to know, like and trust you. So, no matter what you are doing whether it's filing, answering phones, or what you are trained to do, you do it with enthusiasm. You want to do it for a couple of reasons. First, to show that you are stellar at what you do. Second, to present your wonderful personality. And third, when they report back to your agency they will say great things about you and your work so when that assignment is over, the agency knows you are a great representative for them.

And, don't just communicate with the people you directly report to. Branch out and speak to the people in the department, even the entire company. We are growing our network here.

There are other ways to network face-to-face that I will tell you about in another article. But for now this is your mission.

1.) Get your resume together. Agencies are going to want to view it too!

2.) Start looking into staffing agencies in your area. Ones that specialize in your industry and also general ones. Don't just sign up for any one. Do some research, ask around, read reviews if you can find them. You want to sign up with a reputable company.

3.) Once you're comfortable with what you find, pick up the phone and ask questions. How do they work? How do you get considered? What do they require?

4.) Don't be afraid to sign up with more than one agency. The more you have, the more your name is getting out there.

At the on line encyclopedia Wikipedia, Self Esteem is defined as: reflecting a person's overall evaluation or appraisal of her or his own worth. If it hadn't clicked before, hopefully this definition clarified things, that aagreement #7 is all about self esteem. In this sometimes cut throat world your self esteem is your backbone and you must protect and maintain it, creating the kinds of boundaries that keep it from harms way; starting with your first line of defense, You.
When I was a kid, we used to sing a little ditty: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me." Now, I don't know who came up with this false little sing-song, but we knew even as we sung it that it wasn't true. Name calling hurts. Bad mouthing someone can hurt them or why else would people do it? Certainly when any one of us takes the lead and begins to bad mouth or improperly label ourselves we do the work of eroding our self esteem long before the outside world gets a chance.

So why do we do what we sometimes do? The reasons why are many, but what's more important is sometimes the answer to that question doesn't have to matter. What matters most in some situations is that we recognize that we're doing something harmful and to stop doing it, now. If you've been on a streak of devaluing your self with negative self talk, I'm asking you to please stop. I've been down that street before myself and I'd like to keep it "the road less traveled,' because it does nothing but breed more negativity in my life. Bad mouthing yourself is like a bad infection, it only makes things worse. The answer is to begin to affirm who you truly are or even who you want to become. If you can't think of an affirmation of your own, try this: "I am a beautiful, talented and creative person moving diligently on the path leading to my goals."

Agree starting right now, to not make apologies for or bad mouth who you are, how you're created or how you think. Be you, continue to grow and protect your self esteem, because nobody else will protect it like you can.

Plus size women often have trouble combining the latest fashion + body type + affordability + findability. The quick fix solution could be to lose a few pounds but that is easier said than done. Until the scale reveals the lighter side of things, love your curves and all the thick goodness you have to offer…but health is important so please work on being healthy.

I love my curves but large retail and discount stores don’t love my size. This past week I was shopping at Filene’s Basement and though they do carry my size, nothing was flattering. I noticed over a size 16 the pickings are slim or certain cuts and fabrics don’t look as good. Where can I find the “good” stuff?

I was combing the web and decided plus size women need to know what looks good on their body first before they find the retailers that sell for their body type. Here are a few tips from a Smarter.com fashion blog:

Plus size women should look for cotton dresses that cinch under the chest because they accent the smaller part of the body. Steer clear of empire waist because they make plus size women look bigger.
Plus size women tend to wear Bermuda shorts which are knee-length because they cover the fullest part of the thigh but for shorter women this is a no-no because it can make a short woman look bigger. Depending on your size, you can wear shorts but they have to fit your height and must cover the fullest part of your thigh.
Become a fan of the scoop neck or v-neck t-shirts because they are more flattering on women with bigger bust. Also, avoid crew shirts because they make the chest look huge and must wear shirts with a relaxed fit on the arms.

I love fitted dresses because they make me look myself (especially with a good body shaper) and don't make me look blown out and out of proportion. This website is purely for plus size women 12W-44W.

This site offers more than just clothing but handbags, jewelry and accessories, bras, lingerie and much more. One can definitely find a shopping cart full of great looking dresses, tops, shorts, shoes and undergarment basics.

Full Figured Fashion Week voted Igigi.com the # 1 plus size fashion retailer. I have yet to purchase a dress from this site but I love most if not all the outfits and collections for plus size women. The dress pictured left ( photo courtesy of Igigi.com) is on my to buy list. This dress can be worn at a Sunday brunch, night out with the ladies or charity function. At $98.00, this dress is not pennies but is so fabulous, shows off a little curves, has summer appeal and is extremely classy.

I often look at this site and cannot wait to purchase my first dress...I am sure I will not be disappointed.

You are about to embark on the next part of your journey and I wish you crazy, mad, miraculous moments of success. But we all know that this kind of state won't be around 100% of the time. However, successful people do have a sense of what it takes to be and stay that way.

Successful people are often thought to possess some kind of special energy that seems to sprinkle magic pixie dust on everything they touch and that others hope will rub off; many would say they’ve got mojo. The word mojo immediately conjures up images of personal magnetism and power. A word that used to be somewhat taboo is now valued for its potency and used everywhere from the big screen to the board room. There’s no doubt that in today’s economy most folks recognize that having an edge isn’t an option, it’s a necessity. Having more mojo can give you the edge you need.

Have you ever knowingly turned down you wattage because you believed that would make others feel more comfortable? If you have or still do I'd really like you to stop. Being less than who you truly are is harmful to your spirit and the outcomes of your life.

I once heard a prominent preacher (okay it was T.D.Jakes) say that women ought to turn it down some. He went on to say that a man can't hardly walk in a room full of women anymore because they're doing so much. Buying houses, gettin jobs, etc. (you know regular life stuff). Anyway, the context of his conversation was not about being arrogant, it was about being a good helpmate to a man. I couldn't believe what he was suggesting - turn down your wattage so others can be present? My stepmother even once said that I might have better luck with getting a mate if I didn't tell my dates all of my accomplishments and interests (which are varied) right away. Hello people?! Pump the breaks and let's all read part of the great quote from Marianne Williamson:

"Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do."

In your quest to live the life you truly desire, share your gifts and talents with everyone you meet. On the one hand I am referring to your unique gifts, talents & capabilities; but on the other hand this means be you all the time. Don't hide yourself (gifts & talents) under a rock or play them down or act like you don't have any. You deserve to live a full, rich abundant life experience. Everyone does. You can't control how others respond to you, but you can control your reaction. Be you and nothing less.

Remember, time is short. Do your happy dance. Enjoy life!

A Lovers Getaway

Preface: I have yet to travel the world to my desire but I have had a few places on my mind to visit with my significant other! So this post is based on research and recommendations from others.

I am not a beach person because I hate basking in the sun. However, sometimes we have to stop and smell the roses…or in this case, the sand and intoxicating ocean water. Relationships need time and space to grow and we have to work and nurture our budding love. It is hard to do that when work and life schedules fill up our time. But while your life is crazy and spiraling out of control in a good or bad way…you and your significant other still need to get away from all the distractions and just focus on you.

What other way to do that but go somewhere secluded and cut off from the rest of the world. Here are two resorts on the island of Jamaica and Mexico you both can slip away to for a few days and have FUN.

Picture it! You're sitting in the audience surrounded by your peers and you're listening to the keynote speaker ramble on about how this is the first step in the beginning of your life, blah, blah, blah. You've already stopped listening. You are just waiting for them to shut up so you can get the degree you've worked so hard for over the past four years, go partying, and most importantly collect your graduation presents.

After all the partying and celebration is done and you are back home, you're going to be wondering: "What the heck am I supposed to do now?"

Well, I have some information I want to bring to your attention that you may not have considered.

1.) Remember all those summer, winter, and spring vacations you had? They are over. When you get a job you'll have two weeks. No, to be exact, it'll be 10 business days (15 if you are lucky).

2.) Prepare for your friends from high school to be the same people or totally different. You may find that whether they have or have not changed, you have and you may start reconsidering whether you want to continue to be friends with them.

3.) You are going to have to earn your parents' respect as an adult. Right now, they may still think of you as a child who needs to be told what to do. Don't get angry, they are just stuck in the good ol' days. In some cases, they may never see you in any other way. Talk to them about what you're both expecting now that you have graduated.

4.) Decide what you want and be committed to getting it done.

5.) Don't let others opinions influence what you decide is good for you.

6.) Calculate your total debt, create a budget, pay it all off while simultaneously saving your money. Use budgeting software such as Mint.com.

7.) Take care of your health. You may have been taking your stellar health and physique for granted. Now is the time to keep working on exercising and eating healthier. Once you've lost your health you may never get it back.

8.) Manage your time. Don't try to get everything done for everyone else. Plan out your schedule, be okay with telling people no, and make time to take care and do things that are enjoyable for you.

9.) Don't just sit behind your computer all day and call that a job search. Go out to networking events, join professional organizations in your industry, and volunteer.

10.) Have fun! This is such an amazing and scary part of your life. But think about it, you have a blank canvas and you can paint whatever you want. What life are you going to create?

Working Moms Go Back To School Online Now

Working moms… get back to school online while ‘Project Working Mom 2010’ is giving you the opportunity to receive funding and other resources to help you further your education. If the call was not loud enough before, look at the economy and the rate of how many jobs are being eliminated completely. ‘Project Working Mom 2010’ is an education initiative to get working parents back into college programs online via a $5 dollar scholarship fund.

The initiative addresses three major problems working parents face:

Time
Money
Confidence

Time: Most working parents, single or married, do not have the time to work, care for children and/or elderly parents, home life, and other factors that are time consuming. However, an online program (I completed my Masters degree online at Walden University) is a great way to further your educational goals. Imagine this: put the kids to bed, prepare tomorrow’s meal, lay out the clothes for the next day (or entire week if you are forward looking) and get online for 2-3 hours and learn.

Money: If you are not Bill Gates or Warrant Buffet, you do not have the money to go after whatever you want when you want it. Money makes the world go round and we all need it to survive. Fortunately, we need education to make survival possible. It does not matter if you want to work retail, in the food industry, fashion, media, medical, technology, etc., we need education to boost our earning power.

But college is not cheap and it keeps many from pursuing their dreams. ‘Project Mom’ gives you the opportunity to apply for a chance to receive a full-tuition scholarship to go back to school online.

Just a little sidebar, if you do not receive a scholarship through this initiative, ask your current employer if they offer tuition reimbursement for you to take courses in your field that will not only help you advance personally and professionally, but will help your company achieve their goals and that aligns with the mission. If they do not offer reimbursement, assess whether you can afford to attend online programs part or half-time.

Confidence- Simply put, if you want to be better and reach new heights you must actually do better. You can only achieve what you want if you truly believe in yourself and look to your future with a positive outlook. Easier said than done but you can do it and remember, life presents each one of us with many challenges and obstacles. At times it seems we will never jump the hurdles but at least believe and try. Have that same attitude towards education.

Receiving your degree is not the only thing that will boost your earning power. Experience will get you there as well…so expose yourself to the field you are studying. Put into practice what you are learning; so when you start applying for jobs in your chosen field, you have real experience and know-how to back up your degree.

I am not a mother but I see how hard it is for working parents to further their education. When opportunity comes knocking on your door, open up the door and let that opportunity in.

Rep Yo' City: ATL Shawty! Pt. 2

One could not ask for a greater time than living in Atlanta during the time when the south was taking over the music industry: Lil Jon was shouting "YAYEAH!" and "OKAY" from the mountaintops, and the Ying Yang Twins had us shaking it like a Salt Shaker. The music certainly runs through the veins of the city, and there is no doubt that it colored my experience. With a few favorites like "Snap Yo' Fingers," "Nuck if You Buck" and "Walk it Out" ATL definitely has an unmatchable energy.

It would be impossible to list all the songs that were soundtrack of my time in ATL or to sum up the nightlife in this post. However, I will share some of my fondest memories, which include:

-Club 112- Like most people, I had heard about Club 112 way before even going to ATL (mainly because of the group 112), but I was so surprised to find out how close it was to Emory. Having experienced it at that location and the newer location once it moved to Peachtree, I am glad that I can say I went to Club 112. I honestly don't know if it still open or if it has moved to a new location?

-Django- We certainly frequented this place during our senior year, and throroughly enjoyed it every single time. Plus I vividly remember a cute bartender that worked there.

-Sutra- This place holds some of our fond senior year memories.

-Luckie Lounge- I did not discover this place until my most recent visit back to ATL, but I continue to hear great things about it.

**The After-Party**
One just cannot discuss ATL nightlife without mentioning the Waffle House. This 24-hangout is the perfect end to any night out.

Rep Yo' City: ATL Shawty!

Due to popular demand, we are revisiting Atlanta for a Rep Yo’ City series. (Check out the original Rep Yo City: ATL Shawty! in our last issue) On Travel Tuesdays throughout the month of May, we’ll be sharing a few of our favorite things about the ATL and we’re giving you a chance to share your fave things as well.

Spending four years in Atlanta at Emory University, I’ve grown to think of the ATL as a home away from home. As the place where I established some of my firsts tastes of independence of adulthood, Atlanta holds a special place in my heart.

I must admit that Atlanta is where I expanded my palette. Call it the life of a starving college student. Being hungry enough to try anything forced my taste buds to grow up. From my first time really appreciating fresh lettuce and tomato on a sandwich at Emory’s Dooley Den during my freshman year to my first almost addictive experience with calamari during my junior year. Here are a few of my favorite food memories from ATL:

Maddy’s: A Ribs & Blue's Joint- Even though I didn't try Maddy's until my junior year, it might have been my first real experience with Southern BBQ, and it did not disappoint. With a hearty helping of chicken, ribs, baked beans, my first taste of Brunswick Stew, potato salad and the slice of white bread, which serves almost like an edible napkin, I was properly introduced to what Southern BBQ had to offer.
Chick Fil-A- Chicken Biscuit (not to be confused with the McDonald's version, which is okay but just not the same)- the succulent chicken and the buttery goodness of the biscuit combined with a side of hash browns is the only thing that got me and my roommate out of bed and on to campus. If I had $5 to my name, two of them were devoted to my breakfast love. I have to admit that I was skeptical but it changed my life a little bit.
Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles- The smothered chicken is more than a generous portion of crispy fried chicken smothered in a thick gravy that reminded with every bite that I was in the South (and loving it). Served with their macaroni and cheese that is so full of cheesy flavor that it could stand on its own.
Mary Mac’s biscuits were enough to be a meal on their own. I remember them melting in my mouth and oh so warm, buttery and delightful. Something about those biscuits made me envision a granny somewhere.
Fellini’s- The pizza that reminded me little bit of NY pizza from home. Also, the place that made me crave pizza and salad at a time when I didn't even eat salad. Perfect for a late night snack run, Fellini's pizza was definitely a crowd favorite.
Popeye’s Fridays- A tradition that one of my friends shared with a few of us, every Friday for several weeks, we'd make our way to Popeye's for whatever our college budgets would allow. She always got a two piece and a biscuit, and I usually got red beans and rice and always got the strawberry Fanta.
Krispy Kreme- The perfect treat on a late night drive. One of the greatest feelings is to drive by the Krispy Kreme on Ponce de Leon and see “hot” light on. Krispy Kreme donuts are always good, but when they are hot they are A-MA-ZING. They melt in your mouth almost like cotton candy but then the taste is finished with that sweet glaze.

Book Review: The smart cookies' Guide to Making More Dough

Student loans, credit cards, rent, bills, gas, new car, new apartment, 401k, all of these money issues can get a bit overwhelming, especially when you’re not prepared to take them head on. Luckily, a group of women, who refer to themselves as The smart cookies, have composed and shared The smart cookies’ Guide to Making More Dough to equip other women with the knowledge and the confidence to take control of their finances.

They start with the challenge of combating the taboo surrounding money. One cannot get to the root of the problem if it is not addressed directly. The smart cookies encourage the reader to have open and honest conversations about her finances with a select few who she truly trusts. What’s important here is choosing those you share a mutually trusting relationship with and those who will make as serious a commitment to their own finances as well as yours.

The recovery process starts with tracking every penny spent to see just where your money is going. Seeing the entire picture really puts everything into perspective. They also tackle the issue of getting to the root of why you spend money. Emotional spending, which most women can admit to being guilty of, is detrimental to financial well being.

In a friendly and encouraging tone, The smart cookies’ Guide empowers the reader to believe that eliminating her debt and taking steps further to improve her financial situation is very doable. They convey the message that it is not about giving things up and sacrificing everything you love to live a frugal life. It is, however, about making wiser choices, including shopping with sales and alternatives to outings. The “I rather” factor is rather intriguing. Friendly reminders like “I rather be in Paris in 90 days that have this cup of coffee today” help one accomplish long term goals as opposed to satisfying compulsive desires. What’s most beautiful about The smart cookies’ testimonials is their genuine support for each other’s progress.

In addition to helping the reader get control of her present finances they share ways to increase her finances by knowing her worth on her job and pursuing a career path that she love as well as investment strategies. In the book they also share a workbook for any reader to start her own money group to create a support team to reach all of her financial goals.

Don't Wait!

"Don't wait; the time will never be just right: start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along." –Napoleon Hill

There are a lot of people who have dreams and goals they want to accomplish. Yet, when you ask them why they haven't started yet they say, "Oh, I can't do this yet because I don't have... or I have to wait for (fill in the blank)." Is that where you are today?

Let me just break it down for you. There is no ideal time, when all the moons are aligned. I encourage you today to stop waiting. The sooner you get started, the closer you will be to getting what you desire. There is no other perfect time than right now. If you continue to wait for the perfect time, you run the risk of never getting started. And, I'd hate for that to happen to you.

If you want to write a book, start writing. You don't have to have whole plot in your head now. Even if it is just an idea, just put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and let those words flow.

If you want to start a business. Do it NOW! Please, don't wait until the news tells you that the economy is better. Have faith and make a product or service people will want. Because it doesn't matter what the state of the economy is, if people want something, the will find a way to get it.

Want to change careers or move, do the dag gone thang. It's your life.

Whatever it is that you have in your mind to do, or have been putting off until "the right time," just take little action steps to start accomplishing that goal. You're life is waiting to get started, don't procrastinate anymore.

Be Positive All the Time

Maybe you are struggling with your job, friend, family, relationship or something extremely tragic and you don't know how to get through the day! When we think things are bad we don't know where to turn but going through the trials and tribulations of life means one thing...you have a life and are alive! So take the good and the bad and try to be positive all the time. Possibly this is easier said than done. Here are some tips to help you deal with the pitfalls or life:

Tips for Being Positive at Work (From Motivational Speaker Craig Harper):

Surround yourself with like-minded people who energize and motivate you to want to do better and grow your skill set and brain power. Kindly avoid the negative Nancy's!
Invest emotional energy into the greatest return. For example, a project is getting you down and out, instead of venting or expressing your emotional dissatisfaction, do something positive the supports the task you are trying to complete.
Find time to connect and concentrate on who you are as a person, personal and professional goals, what makes you happy and what inspires you to do better! We often forget to focus on ourselves and need a point in the day to go back to basics! Nurture yourself and imagine what a healthy and focused mind can accomplish.

Tips for Being Positive in a Stressful Relationship

Simply put, if he or she is causing you to lose hair or sleep at night then they probably are not the one for you. This is not to say run like heck or dump your relationship in the garbage but you should avoid people that bring you down and do not throw any positive energy your way.
Try to work out your relationship the best way you can but if this person makes you miserable then you must decide what will make you happy. If you are not happy and pleased with yourself, you will not be able to be the best you in a relationship.

Tips for Being Positive with Friendships

They say birds of a feather flock together! Most likely you are going to hang around people who are most like you. To repeat the tips from how to be positive at work, surround yourself with people who are not about the drama and are searching for that light at the end of the tunnel.
Every friendship has to stand the test of time, and most friendships serve a purpose. Just cherish all the friends you have. Treat them the way you want to be treated and amazing things will grow.
Plant the seeds of honesty in your friendships and see what you end up with.

It's hard to think positive all the time! Just learn to love yourself and see what that could bring you. Smile and be happy.

Mark in Morocco- Part 2

Welcome back for Part 2 of Mark in Morocco! Just in case you missed Part 1, catch up here.

To get away from the desert stereotype of Morocco (or to just head for cooler temperatures), I recommend the Atlas Mountain region of Morocco, which was the region by which I was most surprised. My two favorite destinations were Ifrane and Chefchaouen (or Chaouen), Chaouen being my second favorite place in the country.

I only spent half a day in Ifrane, but was captivated by it. Lying high in the Atlas Mountains north of Fez (another wonderful destination), Ifrane was built under the period of French colonization as a skiing village - and it shows. You could be mistaken for thinking you are in a small Swiss Alpine village - with its snow-covered large plaza, Catholic church and half-timber houses than in North Africa. Though it is mainly a university town (for an English-language university) and resort for Morocco's super-rich these days, it’s nonetheless a fun get away if you just want to head somewhere cooler, see some snow, get a glimpse at the lifestyle of Morocco's rich and powerful (and compare it with some of the poverty you've seen elsewhere, especially in the Sahara), and take in the bizarre wonder of being in a French skiing village in Africa.

Chefchaouen (or just Chaouen) is a relaxing, very accessible small city set in the lush, verdant Atlas Mountains. The city was founded by Muslims and Jews expelled from Spain during the Inquisition, and as such the architecture has a very Andalucian feel. Though, perhaps the city's most notable feature is the shades of blue of all the buildings in the city (a tradition taken from the town's former Jewish population). A far cry from the hustle and bustle of cities like Fez and Marrakesh, and subsequently much safer and less aggressive than those places, the blue hues of the city's building, surrounded by the lush green of the surrounding countryside, allows you to catch your breath, relax, and enjoy the kindness and friendliness of small-town Morocco. You can hike from one city to another, take in views of the city from the ruins of an old mosque from a hill above the city, or just take in the historical sights of the old city - the mosque, the palace, the synagogue. Of course, the city's reputation as a center of cannabis production (kif or shisha, in the local dialect), doesn't hurt all that relaxing either, and helps explain the laid back nature of the city's population.

I really cannot recommend Morocco as a travel destination enough. The country's beauty does not disappoint, and the people are so kind and friendly. While it’s true you'll meet bad people who'll just see you as a dollar sign wherever you travel, the majority of Moroccans were so kind and friendly and helpful. I've never been to a country where people seemed so genuinely curious about how I was enjoying their country, and excited to give me advice on what they thought I should see or where I should go. As much as I can recommend visiting for the beauty of the country, I can also recommend it for the kindness and warmth of the people. It is truly a wondrous destination.

Mark in Morocco- Part 1

The Morocco series continues! This week it's all about HIS Journey. Let's take a trip to Morocco with our guest contributor Mark.

Morocco is one of the most exotic travel destinations in the world. When it comes to mind, you can't help but dream of winding lanes through sandstone buildings, market stalls piled high with fragrant spices and nuts, the golden dunes of the Sahara, and the haunting lilt of the call to prayer. Morocco surely delivers on all those stereotypes, but what surprised me when I visited was how much more it is - from bustling modern metropolises like Casablanca, to snow-covered French ski village of Ifrane to the verdant, lush mountains and valleys around Chefchaouen to the sparkling beaches of Essaouira - the country certainly has something for everyone.

Working as an English teacher in southern Spain last year, I had the privilege of being able to continent hop to Morocco in less than two hours. After an hour and a half bus ride, all that was left was a half hour ferry between Algeciras, Spain and the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on the African coast. The journey between the two continents was truly memorable - watching Europe fade into the horizon as Africa approaches you, and being able to see both continents at once as you sail through the middle of the Strait of Gibraltar. However, that short journey surely belies the world of difference between the place you have left and the place where you will be arriving.

Although I have traveled all over Morocco, my favorite destination by far remains Marrakesh. Marrakesh is perhaps the most iconic of Morocco's major destinations (and where I hear the Sex and the City girls will be traveling to in the next movie), and definitely delivers on all those Moroccan stereotypes. Surrounded by beautiful and well-kept red/pink clay walls, and studded with beautiful gardens, the city is truly one of the most beautiful in Morocco. A walk around those walls or a visit to one of the many gardens of the city (especially the Majorelle Gardens) will not leave you disappointed. However, the real jewel of Marrakesh is the city's massive central plaza - the Djemaa el Fna. A walk around the plaza at any hour (but especially at night [refer to picture]) will satisfy every dream you've had for Morocco: snake charmers with their pipes, dancing monkeys, Berbers dancing in traditional costume, storytellers captivating enthralled audiences with their animated tales, salesmen loudly hawking their wears - nuts, spices, rugs, orange juice, souvenirs, men begging you to come to eat at their restaurant, trying out a greeting to you in nearly every foreign language. Among all that excitement you just can't help but smile and think "I'm here."

There's perhaps nothing more enchanting than sipping a Moroccan mint tea (sweet and delicious), on the balcony of one of the cafes surrounding the plaza and taking it all in as the sun sets over the city. If you're lucky, the sounds of the bustle of the plaza will be interspersed at sunset with the call to prayer, as you hear it ring out from all the mosques of the city. It’s a truly beautiful sound (however, despite my expectations of a Muslim country, almost no one seemed to stop and pray).

For another taste of stereotypical, but nonetheless beautiful, Morocco, I recommend riding a camel through the Sahara. Not only is it the "green" way of exploring the desert (4x4 or Jeeps tend to kick up sand which leads to dust storms and desertification for Sub-Saharan Africa), but going slowly allows you to truly take in the beauty of the dunes - the patterns the wind leaves in them, the shadows they create. Plus, you begin to feel like an Arab trader going up and down sand dunes on your hump-backed friend. We spent the night at a Berber camp, which allowed us to take in both the sunset and the sunrise, which were spectacular (the first ray of light of the sunrise is green). Just a word from the wise: make sure your camel's saddle is secure! Camels are high, and sand is not as soft as it looks, and you falling off will lead to your camel and all the camels in the train going nuts, carrying your travel companions terrified off into the distance while nearly trampling you. I'm speaking from experience here. :-)

Implementing a three phase recovery plan: emergency, transitional and reconstruction, Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to helping the 1.5 million Haitian people whose homes were destroyed. Their tremendous efforts can be magnified with yOUR help. Mi encuentro con Marruecos (My Moroccan Encounter)

Guess what? I just got back from the "Motherland!" (Africa, that is). The girls from GSU and I just spent the last couple of days in Morocco and boy, do I have some stories to tell. Morocco always seemed like such an exotic place, so I was excited to go. After all, classes had not yet begun, so I wanted to take the opportunity to travel as much as I could. I admit, it was a last minute decision and honestly I did not know what to expect.

Our trip started out with a 6-hour bus ride to Madrid. We arrived at the Madrid airport at almost midnight and since we had 6 am flights to Marrakech, we decided to spend the night at the airport. That was a fun night. We were so tired, we were laughing deliriously the entire night. We tried to sleep on the hard and cold airport floor, but after numerous failed attempts, we just decided to sleep on the plane. Once on the plane I was knocked out. I think I woke up to the sight of the beautiful Atlas mountain range that sat over Marrakech. It is one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen.

However, we had a problem. The pilot couldn’t land the plane because of a thick fog that covered the city. We circled in the air for about 45 minutes or more. I was going in and out of sleep, interrupted intermittently by the pilot’s announcements about why he couldn’t land. Finally, he said that we were going to land in a nearby city to solve the fog problem. Ok, apparently the word “nearby” was relative. We landed in Algadir, which is a city on the Atlantic coast and about 155 miles away! Plus, it was not even the closest airport. Sheesh. At first I thought it was hilarious. Probably because I was not expecting what would come next. They then made us get off the plane without any further instructions at all. Somehow I assumed we were going to stay at the airport until the fog cleared and would be subsequently put on another flight to Marrakech. Nothing of the sort. We waited for about 2 hours at the Algadir airport until they put us on a bus that would take us to Marrakech. At first they told us it would take 3 hours to get there, but it ended up taking us about 5. We were originally supposed to arrive in Marrakech at 7am; we didn’t get there until 5 or 6pm. We lost an entire day.

When we finally arrived the bus dropped us off at some random spot from which we took a taxi to the main square, Djamaa El Fna. Man, there were A LOT of people. I was a little overwhelmed. And I guess I didn’t know exactly what to expect so I experienced some serious culture shock. Plus, I think after the rough travels and sleep deprivation my emotions were off kilter. That night we got something to eat and found us a nice hostel. It was pretty nice and the guy at the front desk (Aziz - super nice) gave us a good deal. We stayed practically on the main square, right in the middle of all the action and across the street from a nice park. That night we walked around for a bit and went to get some ice cream. Even at night the plaza was full of life and excitement. Small groups were playing drums, there were kiosks with all kinds of fruits and spices, there were even snake charmers and people with trained monkeys. Before coming I was actually worried about how I should dress since Morocco is a Muslim country and I didn’t want to wear anything that would be offensive. Also, it was just us three females so that first night I was a little on edge. I was actually surprised to see the women dressed in all different ways. Some wore tradition dress, some were covered completely, while others wore regular clothes without any head covering. After noticing that, I felt more at ease.

The next day we decided to explore a little bit of the city. We decided to go to the Bahia Palace. To get there we walked through areas that were not as touristy. I enjoyed it because I got to see how locals really live. The palace was beautiful and very much like many of the alcazares (palaces) that I have already seen in Spain. After coming to Morocco, I could really see how strong the arab architectural influence was (and still is) in Spain.

That next day was our big shopping day. Souks – here I come! The Souks has got to be the greatest place to find good bargains. It's this laberint of local venders where you can buy everything from leather purses to silver jewelry. I collect vases from different countries so I bargained my way to a good price on a beautiful ceramic vase with a cool camel bone design. But if you ever go there, be careful not to get lost because it is seriously a maze. We decided to stay on a straight path and I must say we were quite successful in finding our way back out.

On our final day there we visited the Koutoubia gardens. The Koutoubia is the most important mosque in Marrakech. We had the entire day to chill, so we walked alongside the ancient city walls to the Majorelle Gardens. It was a long walk, but once we saw the gardens it was well worth it. It was breathtaking and a great way to end our trip.

We also spent that last night in the Marrakech airport, since we had an early flight. LOL. It was so cold we had to huddle together to stay warm. And to top it off, when we got back to Madrid, we missed our bus back to Málaga :(

Overall, we had a fun and fantastic trip. Next time I would love to go to the Sahara. Most of our frustration on this trip was associated with the traveling itself. And really, it brought Kelley, Lizette and I closer together. I don't rememeber ever laughing so much in my life. Everywhere we went something funny happened that we still laugh about even after having come back.

Agreement #3: I agree to remember that there is no perfection, only process.

That bears repeating many times in a single day. There is no perfection only process. Most people would agree that America is a country that worships perceived perfection. What immediately comes to mind are celebrities. In this country there's a fondness for building a false reality of perfection around a highly visible person and than at the slightest glimpse of human-ness, many of us participate in vilifying the poor celeb for not being what they can never be... perfect.

The influence of reality television and a pervasive fascination with experiencing our 15-minutes-of-fame can put a lot of pressure on both the young and not so young. For example, the recent emphasis on Anjelina Jolie's ability to snap back to her pre-baby weight after having twins. Some women will compare themselves to Jolie and think because she's been able to achieve this in 3 months no less, that she's perfect. This lulls us into believing that perfection is the absolute.

Okay, let's examine a different arena. In my writing classes my students typically approach the class from the philosophy of perfectionism. They come to college and think they should immediately have things figured out and that to reveal that they don't is shameful. (Note to self - preoccupation with perfectionism is the road to shame, while process is the road to confidence.) I spend most of my energy the first year giving them exercises to teach them how to be comfortable with process. How to make it a way of life. They, like all of us, must accept process over perfection if they are to mature and grow in any meaningful way.

This agreement asks us to be mindful of the inevitability and power of process, as noted by the great playwright, Samuel Beckett: "Try again. Fail again. Fail better."

The learning and revelation that's born from the philosophy of process, that's what we should really be after.

Tica Travels: Keep it Movin'-Part Uno

I hope you're ready to save some money with this episode of Tica Travels where I keep it local and share the pro's and con's of travelling state-to-state with certain bus companies.
Even if you own a car, consider releasing your gas money worries, call your girlfriends and schedule a weekend road-trip the old-school way (you know, before you had a license). More than saving gas and money, you'll have more time to chat with your girls, update your social networks, and read your favorite blogs!

If you're a frugal traveler like me, you appreciate getting away for mini-weekend getaways from time to time. The luxury of living in a big city is that at any given time of the day there are countless ways of getting in and out-- by air, land, and even sea. If you only have one weekend to spare you might not want the hassle of taking a flight and might decide a road-trip to a neighboring state might suffice. Even if you don't own a car it's no biggie- taking the subway, taxi, or city bus to any major bus terminal or stop is only a Metrocard/credit car swipe away. If the classic Greyhound bus is still above your price range, have no fear the top two leading competitors are here.

Welcome to the "Chinatown" Bus vs "Bolt" Bus battle.

The "Chinatown" bus is not an official company name. Chinatown simply refers to the people who run these buses and the location that they're operated in. If you're familiar with any major city in the East you know they all house their own unique Chinatown. On the East Coast, these buses pick you up in one Chinatown and a couple of hours later, leave you in a next. Bus companies include: Lucky Bus and Fung Wah in Boston, MA, MVP Bus and Washington Deluxe in Washington DC and New Century Travel in Philadelphia, just to name a few. The man behind the wheel is almost always Chinese and that's another way to distinguish the buses. These operations might seem hush-hush by the lack of online information (don't expect to reserve your seats ahead of time for most) but make no mistake these companies have been in place since the late 1990's and they will be around for a long time to come!

Morocco: Fez Pt. 2

After getting that little taste of Morocco from Jenelle's first post, we knew you'd be back for more. As promised, here are the rest of Jenelle's tips for your visit to Fez:

3. ‘THESE MINT LEAVES TASTE GOOD” – Visiting The Tannery

Speaking of leather, another must-see is the tannery.The tannery in the medina is the oldest leather tannery in the world, and features leather-making techniques unchanged since the Middle Ages. It is composed of numerous stone vessels filled with a range of dyes and liquids. From above, the vats and colors look exactly like a painter’s pallet. Workers use a mixture of ingredients, including bird droppings, to help the leather take the dye more effectively. It’s a really amazing scene to see, but you’ll probably be a tad distracted by the strong smell of animal hide baking in the sun.

You should definitely try to visit early in the morning before the sun hits the tannery and the smell starts rising. If you’re not so lucky, have no fear, because you’ll most likely be offered a sprig of mint leaves. But, as tempting as they may look, they’re not for munching!

On my first visit, I thought the mint was a snack. Although it seemed slightly odd, I still happily munched away on my sprig until I realized I was the only one eating it! So, save yourself the embarrassment, and use the leaves to take your mind, and your nose, off the smell.

Either way, the stench is definitely worth braving as the view over the balcony allows you to witness a practice that has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. It is all achieved manually, without the use of modern machinery—just some good ol’ elbow grease and foot stomping, to help you get the picture.

After your tour, you can lose yourself in the tannery store, where you’ll find a gorgeous array of goods including shoes, belts, jackets, bags, and other trinkets.

Don’t forget to put your poker face on and put those newly acquired bargaining skills to good use!

4. FIT FOR ROYALTY –Getting A Good Night’s Rest

After spending a day in the medina, you’re definitely going to need a restful place to lay your head. When in Fez, I recommend staying in a restored house, called a riad. Many are considered too expensive for the locals, but it’s about the same price as a stay in a Western hotel.

My sister and I stumbled upon Riad El Yacout after it was recommended to us

by a Moroccan train passenger.

Although someone from the riad met us at the train station, I have to admit that upon arrival, we were a bit wary of the location—it was nestled in a narrow, dusty alley on a random street on the outskirts of the medina. The street was even too small for our taxi to fit through! We were just about ready to turn on our heels and run screaming back to the train station when they opened the heavy, Moorish door and led us inside.

The best way to describe the riad is simply: paradise. There were birds chirping and flying across the hallways, and the trickle of the rose petal-laden indoor fountain was most relaxing. The noise from the hustle and bustle outside was inaudible, and it was much cooler inside the walls than out on the street. The riad even featured a roof that could be opened during the day and closed during inclement weather.

As with any hotel, each riad is different and unique. However, they commonly feature suites ranging in décor and layout, each exquisite in its own right. They are lavishly decorated with textiles embroidered in the colors of the rainbow, stained glass windows and doors, as well as intricate tile work. As an added bonus, they also come equipped with air conditioners and television sets.

While there, my sister and I were lucky enough to be the only guests present and we not only felt like royalty, but were treated that way as well. Every morning the waiter waited for us to emerge from our room, and brought us a breakfast that could feed at least four people. It included assorted sweet breads (Moroccans love sweets!), fresh orange juice, eggs made however we liked, and endless cups of coffee and tea. Dinner was another banquet—we rarely ever finished our meals.

Being the only guests also allowed us to roam the riad freely. We explored each suite and made many a visit to the rooftop. We also became friends with the workers there and knew each by name by the time we left.

Even if you’re not as lucky as we were, you’ll leave wondering why every hotel in the U.S. isn’t modeled after a Moroccan riad.

5. CULI! CULI! (EAT! EAT!) – Native Dishes You Must Try

You haven’t truly experienced all a country has to offer until you’ve tried their food. Moroccan food is delicious and a treat—as long as you don’t eat from the street vendors. We’ve all been told never to drink the water in an unfamiliar country, and Morocco is no different. Speaking from a not-so-pleasant personal experience, you might just want to stick to bottled water and hotel or restaurant food only.

That being said, Moroccan food is known for its savory flavors and many ingredients, and will definitely be a pleasant experience for your taste buds.

Although not a dish, the most popular, and my favorite, is the green tea with mint. Making good mint tea in Morocco is considered an art form, and the drinking of it with friends and family members is one of the important rituals of the day. The technique of pouring the tea is as crucial as the quality of the tea itself. Moroccan tea pots have long, curved pouring spouts, which allow the tea to be poured evenly from a height. Properly poured tea results in frothy bubbles, which is preferred.

Other staples dishes to try include Tajine (Tagine)—the national dish, Pastilla, and Harira.

Tajine is a dish which is named after the special pot it is cooked in. The traditional tajine pot is made of heavy clay, and is composed of two parts; a base unit which is flat and circular with low sides, and a large cone or dome-shaped cover that rests inside the base during cooking. The dish itself is a stew slow-cooked at low temperatures, resulting in tender meat with aromatic vegetables and sauce.

Pastilla is a pie dish which unexpectedly, but deliciously combines sweet and salty flavors; a combination of crisp layers of a thinner form of the phyllo dough, savory chicken cooked in broth and spices, and a crunchy layer of toasted and ground almonds, cinnamon, and powdered sugar.

Harira is the traditional soup that is usually eaten during dinner in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan to break the fasting day, and is considered a meal in itself. It can also be served to relatives and friends after a special celebration, such as the morning after a wedding night. Luckily for you, you won't have to wait until Ramadan to taste Harira. Just visit any Moroccan restaurant to get your fix.

If you love exploring new lands and meeting warm, friendly people on your travels, then Morocco is for you. And any trip to Morocco would not be complete without a stop in Fez. If you miss out on Fez, you will have missed a chance to take the exciting and rather colorful step back in time that it provides.

5 Things You Must Experience In Fez, Morocco

Being prepared is the best way to ensure a great vacation. Here are some great tips for an exotic trip you won’t find in a guide book.

“BELEK BELEK! WATCH OUT FOR THAT DONKEY!—Navigating The Medina

Fez, Morocco has the best-preserved old city in the Arab world, the medina of Fes el-Bali, which is also the world’s largest car-free urban zone.

Walking through the medina of Fes el-Bali involves using all five senses at once, while still trying to enjoy the experience. I would describe it as a Wal-Mart super center in its earliest stages. However, instead of neatly aligned and clearly marked aisles, you’ll find an earthen maze of everything you could ever imagine: livestock, brass utensils and decorations, cotton, textiles, medicine, food, and clothing.

Oh yeah, and none of the streets in the medina are named.

A visit to the Fez medina is definitely not for the faint of heart, or those who can’t handle walking around for hours. It’s almost guaranteed that you’ll be prodded to buy a live chicken or rabbit, or see animal heads hanging as you pass. But, if you duck into one of the many tiny stores, you’ll be sure to find hidden treasures.

For example, Fez is known for its hand-stitched table settings which are sewn in designs that are symmetrical, even when you flip them over. Just step inside to see this process in action and witness the women hunched over their craft as they sew for hours at a time. Interestingly, it is said that they are only allowed to work four or five hours per day, otherwise the constant focus on the small details of their work will make them blind.

You can also dip into the apothecary, where you’ll find an array of oils, herbs and spices, which can be used for cleansing or healing purposes, or simply as an addition to food. Another place you’re definitely going to get pulled into is a tribal rug store.

Morocco is known for its hand-woven Berber rugs, which come in a variety of sizes and designs. Certain tribes are known for the specific patterns used, so you’ll not only be buying a piece of furniture, but history as well.

However, buyers beware: merchants will often try to sell you a rug for more than it’s worth. But, you’ll learn how to bargain your way to a deal in no time…

“I GIVE YOU SPECTACULAR PRICE” – The Art Of Bargaining

If you’ve never had to do it before, you’ll be a pro at bargaining after visiting Fez. Shopkeepers and guides are very assertive and you will have to get used to saying “no” a lot. It can be a very frustrating and time-consuming practice the first few times, but after walking around the medina, you’ll quickly learn how to hold your own. Once a merchant realizes they might lose your business, they will agree to almost any price you suggest.

In one instance, my sister and I actually spent three hours bargaining for leather goods at the tannery. At the end of it all, we bought two leather jackets, leather bags and wallets all for the price one leather jacket would have cost in the United States. I have to admit, we worried that it wasn’t fair to the workers (they were the ones losing money), but it became clear that their only concern was making that sale.

Despite the hassle bargaining sometimes is, most merchants are genuinely warm and friendly even while trying to sell you something. Bargaining for goods is a welcome change from the fixed prices we’re so accustomed to, and you can’t help but feel giddy when walking away with your purchase.

Book Review: Life After College

In this course Real Life: 101, the first assigned reading on the syllabus is Life After College: What Your Parents and Professors Never Taught You.

In this text, life after college expert ChaChanna Simpson shares simply stated advice on various difficult situations that recent graduations face: moving back home versus getting your first apartment; preparing for, obtaining, and doing well at your job. She breaks down finances: budgeting, credit scores, health and life insurance, even preparing for retirement. What resources do I need? (You may not have or know everything yet to reach that goal. So find out what you need to know.)

Get those mind juices flowing and get to work on what you want. I'd hate for you to keep depriving the world and yourself of your unique talents. It's really selfish of you.
